Story
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Liz Rodda and I am the Case Manager in South Australia for MATES in Construction; a position and a charity that I truly love. MATES is calling for your support. I will be walking Kokoda this year and hoping to raise funds to help continue the amazing work that MIC does, through the different levels of training and support offered throughout Australia for workers and their families, in the construction industry. We often talk about Mates looking after Mates and this defines many things we associate with Kokoda.
Courage, mateship, sacrifice and endurance. These are words which help describe the Anzac spirit those that fought and died on Kokoda and many other battles. With over 97 kms of muddy, sodden track to walk, I know these are words that will describe the team I walk with on Kokoda. There will be moments of reflection, sadness and great joy. My mind will be drawn to all those that have walked before me, those that gave their life and those that fought and continue to fight around the globe, so we can call Australia home. One of those dear to me, is my children’s great grandfather George, who fought in Burma and was a Prisoner of War (POW) on the Burma railway. George spoke rarely of his time as a POW but I know he experienced the courage, mateship, sacrifice and endurance that encompass the Anzac Spirit. My love and memories of him will be with me on the track.
In 2014, 37 champions collectively raised over $150 000 by participating in the Kokoda Trek. This money has allowed continued funding for a field officer in the Surat Basin. In 2015, we’d love to reach a similar target. My initial goal is to raise over $5 000. Every little bit helps with ongoing support and training, which in turn keeps you within the industry safer. . Please help me, help you by supporting me to raise funds to continue the work that we within MATES in Construction care so passionately about.

MATES in Construction (QLD & NT) Ltd
MATES in Construction is a charity set up in 2008 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers. It is owned and controlled by the Australian Building and Construction Industry.
MATES in Construction provide community development programs on sites and support workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. In a joint venture with the Oz-Help Foundation, MATES in Construction also provide Life Skills Toolbox training to apprentices and young workers.
MATES in Construction is based on the simple idea that “suicide is everyone’s business” and that if the building and construction industry in Australia is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of workers and to reduce suicide then it cannot be left to the mental health professionals, but rather everyone in the industry must play their part.
MATES in Construction is independent of employers and unions and never works directly for a particular employer, but for the construction industry generally. Programs are delivered across the industry regardless of employer and / or union affiliation.
MATES in Construction operates in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia through independently managed and financed organisations, within an overall MATES in Construction Australia structure which was set up in October 2013
MATES in Construction refers to one or more of the independent national or state-based organisations of the MATES in Construction group, all of which are Australian companies limited by guarantee. Each state-based organisation is a member of the national organisation, MATES in Construction (Aust) Limited. Each MATES in Construction organisation is a separate legal entity and has no liability for another entity's acts and omissions. MATES in Construction is the brand name for the MATES in Construction group and is used by each separate MATES in Construction organisation.
